Next Sunday, December 13, 2009, the exhibition run of Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, will come to an end. This was the last exhibition in their temporary space and was received with highest interest by the press as well as by the audience. The Art Gallery will now move to their new building by Randall Stout Architects, Inc., Los Angeles, USA. Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings will next be on view at the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. The opening date is January 28, 2010.

Art Centre Basel exhibition enters the Top 10 Charts

Published on page 29 in the print edition of The Art Newspaper, No. 201, April 2009, you will find the attendance figure charts for architecture and design exhibitions for 2008.

The Art Centre Basel exhibition Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings has entered the charts on the 10th place with overall attendance of 90'728 visitors, while it was shown at the Pergamonmuseum in Berlin.

We are very happy about this result and would like to thank the Pergamonmuseum Berlin again for this successful collaboration.

The exhibition Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings is still on tour and is still open for booking.

At the moment, the 'runner-up' venues regarding audience attendance figures are the Louisiana Art Museum, Humlebaek/DK (78’000 visitors) and Univ. of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor/USA (54’000).

We are happy to announce the next venue of our exhibition Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts Projects Buildings.

The exhibition will be on display at the Frist Center for Visual Arts, Nashville TN from May 29, 2009 - August 23, 2009.

We are proud to announce that the catalogue of this exhibition has met with such great interest that the publishers have suggested to also make it available in Chinese. The Chinese edition (ISBN 978-7-5611-4045-1) has recently been published by Randomhouse Publishers and is now available from bookshops.

Additionally, a Spanish edition is in preparation for the venue in Huesca, Spain in 2011.

The Art Centre Basel was founded in 1984 by Suzanne Greub and is therefore celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009 with a wealth of new and thrilling ideas and projects.

After a period of intense research, conceptualisation and development, we are happy to announce new and additional exhibition projects on our website. The topics are varied and stimulating, as you can see from these few keywords:

The next venue to open the exhibition is the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor, MI, inaugurating its brand new Allied Works Architecture building on Saturday, March 28, 2009 (public opening). The exhibition will be on view at Ann Arbor until May 3, 2009. The exhibition travels in North America until April 2010.

Art Centre Basel's exhibition managers are using Skype to receive your incoming calls.

Skype lets you make free calls over the internet to anyone else who also has the software installed on their computer.
It's free and easy to download and use, and it works with most computers. Skype offers free global telephony and unlimited voice calls with its software.

In addition to free calls from PC to PC, Skype also offers, for a small fee, the possibility to call any landline number on the planet, like with any other normal telephone.

Getting started is easy. Just download the FREE software at www.skype.com and install it on your PC. You will also need to have installed a Headphone/Microphone device on your PC to listen and speak. Pergamonmuseum Berlin Visitor Statistics

The Pergamonmuseum Berlin recently hosted our exhibition Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings from March 12 through May 25, 2008.

We have just been informed that the show in Berlin had 90'728 visitors (~1'225 visitors per day).

The Art Centre Basel is very happy about this attendance figure and wishes to congratulate the Pergamonmuseum for this great success with our exhibition.

The exhibition is now on display at the Louisiana in Humlebaek/Denmark.

The travelling exhibition "Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings" has officially been opened at its seventh host museum venue, the Lousiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark.

The echo in the press was very positive. One of the most important newspapers in Denmark gave the exhibition 5 out of 6 stars, says Birgit Flügge, curatorial coordinator at the Louisiana.

The Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig, Switzerland (Basel Museum of Ancient Art and Ludwig Collection), the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museen in Mannheim, Germany, and the Art Centre Basel, Switzerland, are jointly creating an exhibition which will focus for the first time on the myths and facts about the Greek poet-singer Homer and his two epics, the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey”, together with high-calibre works of art from the Bronze Age until today.

Masterpieces of Medieval Art from the National Museum in Warsaw

The Art Centre Basel exhibition entitled Masterpieces of Medieval Art from the Nationalmuseum in Warsaw, shown recently at the Oesterreichische Galerie Belvedere from July 15 - Septermber 16, 2007 has reached chart position 10 in The Art Newspaper no. 189 (March 2008).

With an attendance of 34'556 visitors in Austria alone, our exhibition is within the Top 10 attendance figures of all medieval exhibitions in 2007 worldwide. The exhibtion was however also shown in Switzerland, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Printing of Catalogues has begun

As communicated by Hirmer Verlag, Munich, printing of the catalogue books for our exhibition Homer: The Myth of Troy in Poetry and Art has begun yesterday. Delivery at the host museums and availability in bookshops is expected for March 13.

Preparations for the upcoming opening of our Homer exhibition are in full speed. Public relation communications for the first venue in Basel have begun, the catalogue is ready for printing and the media are starting to cover our exhibition already.

We are looking forward to March 16, when the exhibtion will be opening its doors at the Antikenmuseum Basel und Sammlung Ludwig in Basel/Switzerland.

Masterpieces of Medieval Art from the National Museum in Warsaw

After having been shown in 4 museums throughout Europe (Switzerland, Portugal, Austria and the Netherlands), the exhibition tour of Masterpieces of Medieval Art from the National Museum in Warsaw has ended in Utrecht on January 6, 2008 after almost exactly 14 months.

The exhibition showed a selection of 27 of the most precious and exquisite medieval artworks from the National Museum in Warsaw, which holds a marvelous and extremely well preserved collection of works from that period.

Experts and critics alike were astonished that such fragile works could be allowed to travel to several museums over such an extended period of time, but the careful planning by the Art Centre Basel, as well as the excellent collaboration between the Polish transport company and the several international host museums proved to be perfect. Absolutely no damages were reported on any of the fragile artworks after the final inspection and all the objects have been safely returned to Poland, to again become a part of the permanent display at the National Museum in Warsaw.

Art Centre Basel would like to thank the National Museum in Warsaw for the loans and the collaboration, as well as all host museums for taking on this exhibition. We also would like to thank all other involved companies and persons (transport, insurance, escort, authors, experts, etc.) who have collaborated to make this exhibition a success.

The Art Centre Basel is collaborating with Prestel Publishers, Munich to update and redesign the German and English catalogue editions for our museum architecture exhibition Museums in the 21st Century: Concepts, Projects, Buildings.

Since its first edition in 2006, several of the presented buildings have been completed. A new article will be included and cover designs will be updated.

The intended date of publishing is end of February 2008. Please check your local or online bookstore.
