This exhibition and its accompanying book present a cross-section of the most significant, expressive and high-quality museum structures and projects that have been designed and built within the last 10 years of the 20th century. Obviously every selection is fragmentary and, to a certain degree, incomplete. The curators have concentrated upon the finest of contemporary museum architecture, presenting therein not always the most handsome examples of this architectural type, but rather the most emblematic. Above all, they should be representative of architectural currents, urban or rural sites, dimensions and cultural demands. The 25 selected examples - all key works of renowned, internationally active architects - proffer and excerpt from the complex panorama of the history of museum architecture at the close of the century's last decade, while offering a glance beyond the turn of the millennium.
